For another throwback, I’d like to share a music video idea for Beyonce’s “Rather Die Young”.
The intro to the video will open up inside of a seedy psychiatric hospital. Lights constantly flicker throughout, the walls seem to sweat and a lot of old rusty pipes line the hallways. As the video advances through the hospital, you see doctors and nurses transporting and detaining patients. The camera focuses in a specific doctor and follows him or her as they approach the last solitary padded room. Peeking into the room through the small window the doctor jots down notes. Another doctor slowly walks over and asks "Has she made any process?". The camera then slowly shifts into the small window to catch a glimpse of the patient....and there sits Beyoncé on the floor in a straitjacket staring off into space. The doctors conclude that she hasn't made much progress and won’t stop obsessing over someone named “Shawn”. Beyoncé hears them mention the name Shawn and begins to have an episode. The doctors frustratingly leave and hits the light switch in the hallway, but a few lights stay on spotlighting Beyoncé in her room,
The song now begins.
Beyoncé sings the first rolling around the floor and moving along the walls as she tries her best to break free of the restricting straitjacket. Beyoncé fearlessly sings straight into the camera and the camera follows her every moment as she sings. By the time the first chorus comes, her movements become more irate prompting the security and nurses to come.
As the second verse approaches Beyoncé is shown strapped to a gurney like contraption in the upright position. Beyoncé is still singing directly into the camera as she is being wheeled down the hallway. They wheel her into a room where the doctors and nurses begin prepping her for electromagnetic shock therapy. The entire second chorus is her getting shock and doctors failed attempts at sedating Beyoncé. Beyoncé continues to sing through everything happening.
The song all of a sudden fades and stops as the video shifts to Beyoncé sitting in a common area with other patients, She sits in a chair with her knees to her chest looking around aimlessly for an out, but all we can hear is the loud tick of a clock. She notices a door cracked open across the room and makes a run for it. As soon as she gets up, the bridge of the song starts. It creatively coincides with the crashes in the music during this part, as she knocks over people, objects, and other things on her way to the door. It ends up taking multiple people to try to stop her. Two nurses and two security guards hold her back lifting her off the ground in various attempts to stop her. She continuously reaches her hand out towards the door as if someone is going to pull her through. By the end of the bridge, “Live my life without you”, she is hit with a needle sedating her.
During the musical/instrumental part, the video shows glimpses and past memory images of Beyoncé and Shawn meeting each other, parts of their relationship, the decline of the relationship and the incident that landed her the Psychiatric ward. When the last chorus comes back in we are back where we started at the beginning with Beyoncé laying on the floor of a padded room in a straitjacket. She comes to and just blankly sings the last bit of the song into the camera.
END.
