I am very much in love with Bruno Mar’s 24K Magic era. I feel like we haven’t seen an era like this from an artist in quite some time. I mean he is still promoting the album, which is well over a year old. To be exact the album is strongly going on 16 months and he is still touring with plenty more left in the the tank!
When the album first came out I immediately began brainstorming ideas and I thought of the perfect promo for the album to add to what they were already doing. Obviously, Atlantic Records didn’t need any help with the massive success his album achieved, nevertheless my idea still would have been a cool addition to his era.
Just picture, 24 K Magic The Musical. A short film musical utilizing songs from the album and possibly a few of his older hits. Originally I thought Bruno shouldn't star in the musical. Yea i know, how can the "Star" not star in his own short film musical, but I believe it would be just as appealing if other talents performed the music. Although, I wouldn't be completely opposed to Bruno starring in it just to garner a bigger appeal.
The musical would have spontaneous numbers coming out of nowhere, along with great choreography, some slightly different arrangements to the songs, etc.
The story is pretty simple, it would be set in the early 90’s following a big time singer with a bad ego and attitude. A woman catches his attention, but she doesn’t treat him like everyone else because of his status. She just happens to be a fan of his voice, music, and performances. The complete opposite of a groupie. Of course they fall for each other after a little bit of a tug of war. They both open up new worlds to one another. He uplifts her and she grounds him despite his star power. He messes up the special bond they share and loses her. Through the course of the musical He tries his best to get her back.
Simple story, but how everything would be executed throughout the performance is what would make it special. I’ll give little bread crumbs of what I have been envisioning.
The opening would be presented as a concert with the singer performing "Versace on the Floor" as the crowd is going wild. Throughout all the chaos and excitement, the crowd's noise would slowly mellow out. Through the silence we'd hear the main woman blissfully singing the song. Enjoying the concert with her friends and singing her heart out, it seems as if she makes eye contact with Bruno. At that point the crowd's noise resurfaces. "He looked at me!!!", she tells her friends. “Girl, he makes everybody feel like he’s singing to them", one friend points out. As the song finishes he says goodnight and he runs off stage.
The following scene would show Bruno walking to his tour bus trying his best to navigate through the screaming fans and paparazzi. The main woman and her friends, who are also among the crowd get approached by someone in the singer's camp. “Hey, Bruno is having an after party at his penthouse suite. If you ladies would like to join come to..." Astonished and surprised by the invite the women scream with excitement immediately and leavefor the penthouse afterparty.
The penthouse suit has the exact resemblance of a flashy 90's after party. Bruno presents himself as super egotistical and narcissistic. Once the lady and her friends arrive she ends up catching the singer off to himself and explains how much she admires his work. She notices his nonchalant vibe as he blows her off by saying “Yeah, whatever”. His attitude is devastating as he catches her off guard. He makes several advances and she denies each one subtly. Out of frustration he calls her out of her name and says “If u aint tryna party, leave.” That is when the song "Chunky" comes on and everyone in the penthouse transitions into the choreography. The song will be split up between Bruno and the men in his crew theatrically talking to the girls. As the woman tries to get her friends to leave they continue partying with everyone and singing at the top of their lungs, “I wanna get down.” Her frustrations builds over and She storms out. Bruno notices her storm out and runs after her.
That’s all I’m going to give, but let me know your thoughts!
